Bats R US Wildlife Follow The Best Management Practices For Trapping Skunks
When BATS R US skunk trapping crew gets a call due to a nuisance skunk, we’re well prepared to deal with Connecticut’s Stripped Skunk.
Skunks are relatively relaxed critters and seldom attack unless provoked or protecting their young. Though a skunk can bite, its form of attack is using its two musk glands to carry a nasty sticky fluid that they can spray up to 15 feet and a mist that can reach 25 feet. Even the best skunk trapping expert will get sprayed from time to time. So a word of warning if you encounter a skunk on your property and it starts chattering its teeth, turning its back to you, stamping its feet, and lifting its tail, it’s in your best interest to quietly back away.
Skunks are primarily nighttime critters but will come out during the day to look for food in the form of small mammals, eggs, insects, amphibians, fruits, pet food, and stinky garbage cans. If it’s springtime and a female has babies, she will be especially hungry, and her kits, as many as 8, may be closely following her. It is not unusual for Connecticut property owners to encounter a mother skunk traveling with her kits. Generally, this means mom and her kits are nesting close by and possibly under your porch or shed. If you have a mama skunk and her kits on your property and they are becoming a nuisance, you should contact the BATS R US skunk trapping team.
Since A Skunk Is A Mammal, Like All Mammals, It Can Carry Rabies. As A General Rule, You Should Never Try To Get Close To A Wild Animal And Especially If It Is Lethargic, Aggressive, Confused, Uncoordination Or Lacks Any Fear. If You Think You Have A Rabid Skunk On Your Property, Contact Your Local Police Department And They Can Direct You To The Appropriate Authorities.
Our BATS R US skunk trapping pros use humane baited cage traps. Once we trap the nuisance skunk, we can safely release it back into the wild.
Using high-quality bait like Skunk Indulgence or Critter Bait Bags that lure skunks into our cage traps is the mainstay of out skunk trapping team.
Advice From Our Skunk Trapping Experts On How To Keep Skunks Off Your Property
- Skunks’ eyes are sensitive to bright light when they roam about at night. Place motion-activated bright lighting on your property. Motion-activated floodlights produce a great deal of light. Generally, these bright lights will scare the skunks off your property.
- Habitat modification also helps keep skunks from living on your property. Keep your garage and shed doors closed. Make sure there is no way a skunk can get access underneath your buildings, including your porch and crawlspaces. Our BATS R US crew can protect these areas using strategies and materials that are proven effective.
- Make sure there is no pet food left outdoors and please note bird feeders will attract skunks as well.
Skunks love grubs! So even if you have even a few grubs on your property and there’s a skunk around it will find them. Our skunk trapping team suggests that you consider hiring a grub control service if you have serious grub problem.
Our skunk trapping team can let you know from experience that if you have a grub problem, there is a high probability you’ll have a skunk problem tearing up your lawn to get at the grubs.
Yes, Our Skunk Trapping Crew That Agree Baby Skunks Are Cute But They Still Are Little Stinkers
Baby skunks learn to spray a few weeks after birth. While their stinky spray isn’t as strong as an adult skunk, they can still spray, which often happens without warning, akin to a human baby peeing itself.
On several occasions, clients have called us saying they have found baby skunks without their mother, probably killed by a car or a predator like a fox, coyote, or bobcat. Some of the calls regarding finding baby skunks have to do with whether they can be kept as pets since skunks have become increasingly popular in various parts of the US. Baby skunks are cute, affectionate, and intelligent and can make excellent pets, though they demand special attention. Unfortunately, doing so is illegal for Connecticut residents who want a pet skunk. Seventeen states allow pet skunks, but Connecticut is not one of those states.
So if you have found a baby skunk and don’t want us to take it away, we highly suggest you contact a local rehabilitation center like Claws N Paws Rehabilitation Center. By talking with Claws N Paws, they can give you options of volunteering or becoming a wildlife rehabber. Their information session lasts about an hour, and you will need your phone, Internet, FB, and FB messenger. Study materials and hints on how to get ready are supplied. Information on registration for a compulsory workshop and you must pass a final test. Options to connect with a mentor are furnished.
Baby skunks are adorable, but they are skunks, and they can spray. So forewarned is well warned. When ever one of our skunk trapping crew traps a female skunk we make sure that if she has babies we don’t leave then behind.
A female skunk, on average, has six kits in a liter. Out skunk trapping team will often find a mother and her kits under Connecticut property owner’s sheds, porches, and crawl spaces

Another Great BATS R Us Wildlife Testimonial
“…One Of The Honest Ones.”
“I called with concerns regarding bats in my home — we had seen a black object flying across the house, plus my son marks on his leg that resembled a bat bite. Joe was extremely responsive, texting me shortly after to say that he didn’t have cell service but could communicate via text.
We scheduled an inspection with Joe two days later, and for $25 they took infrared photos of the exterior of my 3 story home and inspected areas of concern inside. 24 hours later I got a text indicating that there was no sign of bats (the fluttering sound in my chimney was caused by black chimney swift birds, two of whom had escaped through an open flue).
I make a point of calling out honest — and dishonest — businesses, because we’ve all been ripped off. Thankfully this is one of the honest ones. I’m hoping we don’t need them, but they’ll be the first we call if we do.”
